About this deal

You cannot miss Bombay Sapphire on the liquor shelf. Its blue bottle has an allure that will catch your eye, though the gin itself is not blue—look to Magellan Gin for that. Contemporary gin: Gins that have a prominent flavor other than juniper. Although juniper is always included in the spirit, contemporary gin refers to a bottle that tastes of other botanicals or flavorings.

Build in a Burgundy glass with ice. First add a grapefruit wheel, then ice, NOLET’S Silver and ginger beer. Garnish with a sprig of mint. Navy Strength: Navy strength gin is the strongest at around 57% ABV. The name comes from the high-strength spirits distilled in the 18th century requested by the Royal Navy. However, the name itself was only coined in the 1990s as a marketing ploy to highlight high-strength spirits. Our methodology to select and rank the best gin brands in the world This gin is distilled in a copper pot still named "Marjorie." The botanical list includes juniper, angelica root, cassia bark, cinnamon, coriander seed, lemon peel, licorice, nutmeg, orange peel, and orris root. It is bottled at a standard 40 percent ABV (80 proof).

Bols Geneverwas on the U.S. marketuntil Prohibitionand was not available again until the summer of 2008. It is bottled at 42 percent ABV (84 proof), and a bottle typically sells for the same price as any premium gin. Carolus Nolet, Sr. took over the running of the family business in 1979. One of the many long-term workers at the distillery told me that he and his father simply switched desks over the weekend. "When we came to work on the Monday we had a new boss." From that first phone conversation, I sensed the friendly warmth and sense of calm the members of the Nolet family seem to exude. Always smartly presented in a sharp suit, complete with branded lapel pin, Bob, his brother Carl and father Carolus have an almost presidential air about them. But importantly, they are friendly people who remember names and faces. This was in the days before the internet so being a Dutch vodka I called the trade department of the Dutch embassy in London and said we were keen on importing Ketel One and could they put me in touch with its makers. It was weeks later when out of the blue, one morning Bob called me.

NOLET’S Silver has also caught the attention of some of the world’s most respected folks behind the bar. Another big difference is the distillation process. Instead of being a simple distillation, like vodka, botanicals are introduced early on during the process to maximize their flavors and aromas. Terminology: The terms to know when talking about gin As you'll be aware from reading about previous generations above, the Nolet family have long had a fondness for America, and like his predecessors, Carolus often spent time there. Since the 1960s, sales of vodka in America had been soaring and by 1975, vodka sales in the U.S. had overtaken those of bourbon.

Barrel-aged gin: Relatively uncommon in the gin world, barrel-aged gins are exactly that: gins that have been aged in a barrel. It’s a slightly unusual practice, which allows the gin to soak up some of the flavors from the barrels as well as the botanicals. Barrel-aged gin has a hint of color, almost reminiscent of some lighter whiskies. NOLET’S Reserve is the family’s quintessential “sipping gin” that captures the aromas of a variety of spices and botanicals, allowing for an intense and layered long-lasting taste. A personal creation of Carolus Sr.’s, four decades in the making, NOLET’S Reserve is handmade in small batches, personally supervised by him. Only a few hundred bottles are released each year and they are all individually numbered by hand and presented in a distinguished gift box. In his own words, NOLET’S Reserve is “a gin of unprecedented excellence that builds on our family’s rich history.” If you enjoy the standard bottle of Beefeater, keep an eye out for the brand's special bottlings. They make an appearance from time to time, and each is worth a taste when the bottle crosses yourpath. Beefeater 24, for example, is a regular offering that is a nice upgrade from the original and the brand often comes out with limited editions. Old Tom Gin: There are no set guidelines for this style of gin, but it is sometimes sweetened with a bit of sugar or other botanicals, licorice is occasionally added, and it can be barrel aged (which is another style of gin in and of itself). Current examples of Old Tom gin come from Barr Hill in Vermont, Ransom in Oregon, and Hibrimi in Iceland.

Martin Miller's is a modern take on traditional gin. It has that wonderful juniper dominance of a London dry and it is perfectly balanced, crisp, clean and simply an extravagant gin. This modern gin is distilled at a higher ABV than usual, too, at 52.3% compared to a standard of between 40-48%. Despite the number, it’s an easy-to-drink gin that’s smooth and round throughout. Its high price point comes mostly from its use of saffron, which is more expensive per ounce than gold and isn’t used sparingly in Nolet’s distillation process. I find that years later Nolet still makes a gin as floral and unusual as it was when it first came onto the market— but it’s a relatively easy gin for mixing. Juniper is present, but that floral touch comes through in nearly everything. Fixative: The most important botanicals used to bind the flavors of the gin. Some of the most common ones include orris and angelica root. We may be a nation of gin and tonic devotees, but that doesn’t mean that your imagination has to stop at ‘ice and a slice’. Take inspiration from a bottle’s botanicals, and choose a couple of those as a fresh garnish. Our favourites include slices of cucumber, a sprig of rosemary or a wedge of grapefruit, to name but a few.Like many other brands, Bols has expanded their genever selection. Beyond the original, you can find barrel-aged bottles, which are rested in French Limousin oak casks for 18 months. There is a beautiful gin inside this distinct green bottle with its red wax seal. Tanqueray's crisp, dry style is the benchmark for a London dry gin without any citrus in the botanicals. It is a standard to which all other gins are compared and contrasted and also sells for a reasonable price. I like to say that ‘Seeing is Believing.’ Up until the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the doors to our family distillery have always been open – since the late 1970s in fact,” says Nolet, Jr. “The doors will be open again and when that happens we will continue to invite all consumers to experience for themselves all the care, attention, and expertise fully on display for everyone to see.” The Botanicals and Process of NOLET’S Gin Sometimes called Dutch gin or Holland gin, genever is a sweetened style of gin that originated in the Netherlands. Today, it is only distilled in that country and in neighboring areas of Europe. The biggest name in genever is Bols, and it is one of the few brands that is available worldwide.

Popular flavours include orange, lemon, cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander and angelica root. The base spirit can be made from a number of different things, including wheat, potatoes or grapes. What does gin pair well with? Over the generations, the Nolet Distillery grew, surviving challenges such as the French Revolution and the ensuing political instability. Generation after generation of Nolets have built upon what has been established by their forefathers. The Eleven Generations of the Nolet distilling dynasty
